EMAS is the EU's voluntary Environmental Management and Audit Scheme. Its purpose is to increase the efficiency of environmental work carried out by any organisation and to market the results through an externally verified environmental report.

EMAS is based on the international environmental management standard ISO 14001. Joining the EMAS system through an official registration should offer advantages above the ISO system.

Marketing advantages include a positive attitude for environmentally responsible organisations, being able to quote EMAS registration in its marketing activities, smoother relations with inspection authorities. Important internal advantages are cost savings and greater staff commitment to environmental work.
